Donzii recently released their debut album Fishbowl via Grey Market Records. They build a dystopia song by song in this project. It offers the listener an all-knowing and seeing view over a fictitious society in a sealed-off terrarium. In the Donzii-verse, there are politics, environmental stains, conventions of sexuality to deconstruct, threats of aliens, and apocalypse. All the little people are just trying to make it through the day.

Donzii

Donzii started in 2015 with vocalist Jenn Balfe and musician Dennis Fuller. The name comes from an Italian speedboat company, corrupted with an extra i-Donzii. The journey leading up to the band’s first full-length release included numerous lineup changes. Following that came musical rupturings, and denials of industry rot. The wedded core of the band, Balfe and Fuller have maintained a pyre that finally alights on the debut album Fishbowl.

Balfe and Fuller, both from Miami, met on an island in Biscayne Bay. Donzii was formed during jam sessions at a run-down suburban mansion from the 70s. The Donzii galaxy has included a number of supporting musicians over the years. In addition, these musicians have helped to form their poly blend of electronics, bass guitar, 80s utopian guitar, and Balfe’s hauntingly spirited vocals. Similarly, Balfe’s poetic lyrics spill from many inner dimensions and intentions. Inspired by the full range of feelings on planet Earth, Balfe and Fuller are allergic to trends but resolutely of the moment. This includes the darkest corners and the sunniest days. Of course, in many ways, Donzii is not a normal band. As Balfe says, there is one rule of all great music that they follow: “We do it so people can dance.”

About Fishbowl

The band said,

Fishbowl is a response to living in a time that appears to offer endless options with the same outcome. The mix of style and genre is an honest and intentional statement regarding the role of the artist as not only a conduit, but a mirror to the overstimulation we experience, in reality and in digital realms.

Balfe & Fuller, 2022

The band is driven by singer Jenna Balfe’s commanding vocals and supported by a communal approach to creativity. Additionally, Donzii has become known for their own breed of performance art. Finally, the 11-track project is out now and available to stream!
