Discus Releases “O My Stars”
On February 19th, Chicago jangly indie-rock band, Discus, released a single titled “O My Stars” along with the album stream to their second album. The musical brothers and creative powerhouse Jake and Paul Stolz are at the forefront of the project. While being known for being a part of Varsity, Pool Holograph, and central Heat Exchange, Discus places the musical brothers at the front. Band members Sarah Clausen, Kevin Fairburn, and Nick Konkoli round out the band.
The Stolz brothers exhibit a plastique routine between guitar arrangements they’ve formed over the many years spent playing together since their early teens in Oak Park. These days, the two write, perform, practice and record constantly between four bands, yet they’ve managed to harvest and retain a style that exudes tenderness, nostalgia, and hypnotic cantor.
Discus has evolved since their lo-fi, Tascam cassette tape recording beginnings. Working out of Michael MacDonald’s Big Box Studios in Chicago and mastered by Alan Douches, the band reveals a higher fidelity side to their music with their second album.
After releasing their debut album, Something Has Happened, in 2019 the brothers were busy recording multiple albums with their other bands, whose music has appeared everywhere from VICE to Pitchfork, but they’ve stayed active with Discus by releasing several single since then and even contributing a track to a Relief Map Records benefit compilation, alongside the links of Wild Pink and Future Teens.
The band will be celebrating the album release a week early locally at The Empty Bottle on March 21st, with Shower Curtain and Sunshiny, as well as a show in Milwaukee at the Cactus Club on March 30th with Operations and Varsity’s own Dylan Wesch. Discus’ upcoming album To Relate To will be out March 28th via new Sunroom on all platforms.
