Billie Eilish Releases Surprise EP, “Guitar Songs”
Billie Eilish released a surprise EP, “Guitar Songs”, on July 21. The EP features two new singles — “TV” and “The 30th.”
Eilish announced the release of the EP via a July 21 post on Instagram. “a little surprise for youuuuuuuuu…… TWO NEW ONES!!!! “TV” and “The 30th” !!!!!!!!!!!!!! these songs mean so so much to me. I am so happy for them to be yours. “Guitar Songs” out now!!!!!”
Both songs share themes of vulnerability as well as personal ties to the performer. “The 30th” reflects on a car accident that Eilish’s friend went through. “What if it happened to you on a different day? On a bridge where there wasn’t a rail in the way?” Eilish questions on the haunting track. Eilish first performed “TV” before its release at a June 7 show in Manchester. The track focuses on abandoning a friendship for a romantic relationship, but also ties in references to current happenings like the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade and the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard — “The Internet’s gone wild watching movie stars on trial / While they’re overturning Roe v. Wade”.
The release of “Guitar Songs” follows a year of impressive accomplishments for Eilish. Earlier this year, Eilish was nominated for 7 Grammy Awards and won an Academy Award for “No Time To Die.” In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Eilish shared that her and her brother Finneas are “going to hopefully make another album in the next year.”
