The 150th Open at St. Andrews

The 150th Open at St. Andrews

Round one of The 150th Open, also known as the British Open, commenced yesterday. The championship was originally held at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. This year The Open is being held at The Old Course at St. Andrews. All the players are excited about being playing at St. Andrews, calling it one of the greatest achievements a golfer can have.

Cameron Young

Currently in 1st place is 25-year-old American Cameron Young. He finished the first round at 8 under. He currently has 3 professional wins, two originating from the Korn Ferry Tour, while the third is from his home state at the Lenox Advisors New York State Open. In May 2022, Young tied for third in the PGA championship. Although this is a great start for Young, he is still 32nd overall on the PGA Tour. He will need to make a great effort to get up in the ranks with his other opponents.

Rory McIlroy

Representing Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy is in second in the first-round, finishing at 6 under. Additionally, McIlroy is currently in 2nd on the PGA Tour. He won The Open and the PGA Tour in its entirety back in 2014. On Thursday he finished with 7 birdies and one bogey. McIlroy said he found “no issues with [his] game” and that “everything feels like it’s in good shape”. He is looking to win his 5th major championship, being the last one he won was back in 2014 for the PGA Championship.

Cameron Smith

Smith, an Australian, is in 3rd at The Open. Finishing the 1st round at 5 under, the 28-year-old is 6th overall on the PGA Tour. Smith has 7 professional wins, but no major championship wins. However, he almost received his first major win in 2020 as a runner-up at the Masters Tournament. The day before he kicked off The Open, he stated he was “feeling pretty good” and thinks this year he “played the best golf of his life”.

Tiger Woods

The American public’s all-time favorite golfer, Tiger Woods, did not have a successful first round yesterday. The 2-time Open champion tied for 146th place, finishing at 6 over. In February 2021, the golfer was hospitalized with severe injuries after a car crash. Although his body has healed, his golf game has not been the same since. Woods is hoping to pick up some momentum in the 2nd round today, find his rhythm to try and make a comeback.
