Jacquemus SS 2021 Presentation: L’AMOUR

Known for their dreamy runway presentation, Jacquemus brought their SS 2021 runway show into the golden fields of barley in France. Models walked down the runway weaved through the field, with audience sitting by the stalks, maintaining a safe distance from each other. This show was livestreamed on July 16th, titled L’AMOUR.

L’AMOUR is like a mesmerizing dream. Jacquemus gathered his inspiration from Alexander Ekman’s choreography of wheat being passionately tossed into the air, and the enchanted realism from Emir Kursturica’s film, Time of the Gypsies. The runway show consists of menswear and womenswear but a smaller collection than usual, with a light color palette. Ivory is frequently seen, with touches of butter yellow, sky blue and dove grey. The garments are made very organic, gently draped that reveals soft silhouettes. Starting with a couple flowy slips, followed by oversized gingham shirts, cropped tops with high slit pencil skirts and dresses appliques inspired by the barley. Not to mention the fun accessories: miniature weaved purses, golden statement jewelry and strappy heals. The entire runway presentation is relaxing and picturesque without too many guests and media present.

Slips, crop tops, pencil skirts and wheat inspired ornamental details seen in the new collection.

Jacquemus and his team wanted to celebrate “love” with L’AMOUR. According to Jacquemus, the design team’s “love” grew even stronger after everyone was separated. “Not long after my team was separated from each other, we were all in our homes feeling the desire to work, and a new vision of the collection emerged. We became a human chain, every step of the creative process executed with love.” Simon Porte Jacquemus stated in his press release. The team showed their love in one of the men’s suits with cut-out heart motifs all over, which is honestly a cute thing. Jacquemus shifted to a sustainable production since last year, with smaller collections and two shows combining menswear and womenswear every January and June. The change of the fashion show schedule proved to be a wise decision this year, since they received supplies before the lockdown.

Jacquemus aimed to create the show as an intimate experience. Using “home” as a source of endless inspiration, interpreting the purpose behind ordinary fabrications and easily neglected objects. As much surreal and breathtaking as the show is, it also implies that what used to be normal appears so unrealistic compared to the “new normal” caused by the pandemic. As of now, all the runway designs can be pre-ordered online, with a full version of the fashion show available.
