Fujimino Man Declines Condolences and Attempts to Murder Medical Worker

66 year old Fujimino man attempts to murder medical workers after a condolence visit on Thursday evening. 

On Friday morning the Fujimino, Saitama Prefecture police arrested Fujimino man Hitoshi Watanabe and charged him with attempted murder after an 11- hour stand-off.

On Thursday evening, three doctors visited the suspect around 9pm to express their condolences on the passing of his mother. Doctor Junichi Suzuki, 44, a 41-year-old physiotherapist, and other doctors worked closely with the suspects mother up until the night she passed.

Yet, despite the sincere gesture, Watanabe opened fire on them in the middle of the night. Watanabe attempted to murder the medical workers with a hunting rifle and later took them hostage. Residents alerted authorities after hearing gunshots. After arriving on the scene, authorities contacted Watanabe during the 11- hour standoff. According to authorities, the suspect did not make any demands except, “I want to help him. Please rescue him.”

Consequently, after 11- hours police rushed into the suspect’s house, arresting him. Upon arrival, the police found Dr. Suzuki dead and the other hostage unresponsive. Furthermore, police rushed the third medical worker who suffered from tear gas injuries.

The victim supported his community as a well known home-visited medial, according to another city medical worker.

According to neighbors, Watanabe lived with his sickly mother and had little contact with others. Watanbe moved to the area with his mother several years ago, states a neighbor.

According to Japan times “The suspect was quoted by the investigative sources as saying he was angry at the quality of his mother’s care by the medical team and had requested that they visit.” 

During the standoff, local authorizes evacuated nearby residential and school buildings, closing off the area for the day.
