Quavo Releases New Single “Dope Boy Phone” Ft. Takeoff

Grammy-nominated recording artist Quavo has officially released his latest single, “Dope Boy Phone” featuring Takeoff, via Quality Control Music/Motown Records. The track marks Quavo’s third release of the year, following “Trappa Rappa” and “Legends” with fellow QC megastar Lil Baby. Featuring a posthumous verse from his late nephew Takeoff, “Dope Boy Phone” revives the unmistakable Unc & Phew connection. Quavo’s iconic ad-libs punctuate the track, while Takeoff’s verse highlights the vivid storytelling that helped shape Migos’ legacy. Trading sharp lines over a booming bass, bouncy percussion, and catchy melody, the duo’s timeless synergy proves their music still stands the test of time.

Review: Quavo Ft. Takeoff “Dope Boy Phone”

The high-energy track “Dope Boy Phone” opens with sparse trap beats blended with a riveting bass and atmospheric synths. This concocts a captivating combination of nostalgia interspersed with modern elements, transporting the listener to easier times. Think less about a time when everything appeared daunting and dreary, but more of times when things were cheerful due to the presence of friends and confidants.

The song’s emphasis on audio engineering doesn’t cancel out the duo’s vocal and instrumentational efforts. Quavo’s recurrent ad-libs don’t feel like asides or interludes. Rather, they work in tandem with Takeoff’s deep and commanding voice. Takeoff’s chopping is resplendent and brings unmistakable energy to the track. The lyrics briefly turn philosophical when the vocalist sings, “I keep the money for the hard time even when it’s sunny.”

Towards the mid-section, the song incorporates hi-hats that effortlessly meld with the underlying atmospheric synths and deep bass. Quavo and the late Takeoff’s larger-than-life personas are extensively detailed in their Rolling Stone interviewfrom 2018. Quavo keeps this “gigantic” sentiment alive when the lyrics assert “I’m highly respected wherever you from.” The light-hearted, yet zestful dubs towards the end offer a great outro as the song exits while maintaining its crisp and punchy theme.
