Lorde Returns With New Single, Man Of The Year

Lorde Returns With New Single, Man Of The Year

Lorde marks the end of a musical hiatus with the debut of new single, Man Of The Year, released on May 29. This long-awaited teaser has fans anticipating the upcoming album, Virgin, set to drop on June 27th. Man Of The Year sets a slow-tempo tone, reflecting on heartbreak from a romantic and once intimate partner. The emotional ballad is raw, where gentle guitar strumming meets Lorde’s melancholy rasp.

In this piece, Lorde writes, “Like new from my recent ego death,” signaling self-discovery in a reminiscent state. The faint guitar in the background allows Lorde’s voice to dominate the track, inviting listeners to become entangled in the hard-hitting grief.

While the beginning of the song seems to be representative of becoming new, the hook backtracks with a question as thick as a knife, “Who’s gon’ love me like this?” As Lorde continues to question her viability of love again, the emotions are easy to gauge and can be understood by those plagued by heartbreak. Although Lorde highlights the complexity of love, she does not overcomplicate its’ rugged effects. Therefore, Man Of The Year is not limited to one experience nor is it simply reserved for those who have experienced heartbreak themselves.

The finality of the song harbors anger, where the once low guitar battles with Lorde’s voice for the first time. This nuance from sadness to anger is easily digestible and perfectly fits the theme. In fact, without this element of anger, the song would have been further incomplete.

Lorde’s last album, Solar Power, premiered in 2021 during the peak of the pandemic. In turn, the angle Lorde takes on Man Of The Year is admirable, unlocking real personal experiences following the three year gap.

Many older songs created by Lorde, such as Ribs produced in 2013, have recently resurfaced on platforms. This resurgence has given Lorde the space to create heartfelt pieces, like Man Of The Year, to reconnect with fans.

All things considered, Man Of The Year is capable of aiding Lorde’s reconnection with fans. It contains emotionally adept storytelling and engaging lines that stand alone, regardless of the background music. Man Of The Year does a great job of setting the tone for a successful comeback into the music industry. Rating Man Of The Year anything less than a 5/5 would be a huge injustice.

Do not miss the chance to check out the Man Of The Year music video and stream on all music platforms. Besides that, mark your calendars for the release of the upcoming album Virgin, premiering on June 27th.
