Kendrick Lamar And SZA: The Luther Visual Experience
Kenrick Lamar and SZA have been making headlines for months with their successful releases and Super Bowl performances. Their song, “Luther,” was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks. The viral hit took the world by storm. With over 142.8k TikTok’s made to the song, it gained even more exposure.
It was inspired by and sampled from Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s 1982 rendition of “If This World Were Mine.” The song, originally written by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, was released in 1967. With the influence of “If This World Were Mine,” the song “Luther” takes on the 1960’s lyricism and 1980’s sound. The Hip-hop genre is known for taking influence from respected and successful musicians of the past, and this song in all versions is a masterpiece. The same message is carried throughout, expressing what they would do for the person they love, if they could have the world they would give it to their lover. It tells everything they would do to protect, empower, and cherish their person.
On April 11th, Kendrick Lamar and SZA released a video to accompany their iconic song. The video, directed by Karena Evans, is intentionally minimalistic. With black-and-white shots showing off the creative architecture, it centers the musicians and their love interests to highlight their stories. As more of the sample song is included, it blends the new and the old. The retro influence is not only heard but also seen throughout the video with mid-century modern decor and vintage fashion.
The rapper and singer-songwriter duo will be on tour to promote their newest albums. Kendrick Lamar released his sixth studio album GNX, in November 2024. One month later, SZA released Lana, the reissue of her 2022 album SOS. The “Grand National Tour” will travel all over North America and Europe, giving fans a taste of the energetic and thoughtful performances they are known for.
