New Year, New Netflix: Top Picks For The Streaming Platform’s 2022 Releases

As the holiday season comes to an end, life is getting busy again. Thankfully, Netflix has added a wide variety of films to distract us from the busy lifestyle. With movies ranging from family-friendly to serious dramas, there’s something for everyone to watch as we transition into 2022.

Family Flicks

The family-friendly musical and 1982 version of “Annie” has made its way onto Netflix. The first film adaptation of the Broadway musical follows the life of Annie, played by Aileen Quinn. The orphan girl is chosen to live with a billionaire and the pair develop a special bond, ultimately leading to her adoption. The Broadway musical has had several film adaptations since then, but this original version holds a special place in the heart of the film industry.

Continuing with musical additions, Netflix added the 2005 version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka. Taking a more fantastical approach to any other adaptations of the musical, director Tim Burton effectively stylized the movie to be a more accurate depiction of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” novel published in 1964. With Depp’s unique acting performances and Burton’s direction, the film is a must-watch for any family looking for an interesting film on movie night.

Animated Additions

For any twenty-something, “Kung Fu Panda” brings childhood nostalgia. While only the first film in the franchise is on Netflix, this does not take away the bittersweet memories associated with the film. This movie is a perfect watch for any college student looking for a break.

The feel-good movie “Happy Feet” is also included as a nostalgic childhood film that was added to Netflix in the new year. With notable voices in the film including Hugh Jackman, Robin Williams, Nicole Kidman and Elijah Wood, this musical is likely to bring a positive mood to anyone who watches.

Serious Selections

Based on the novel with the same name, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” stars Daniel Craig as journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who investigates the disappearance of a girl from a wealthy family. The psychological thriller and Swedish-based film is a must-watch for anyone who has read the book or for someone looking for a more serious film.

Another addition to Netflix’s site is the 2010 Western film “True Grit” starring Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. Steinfeld, who was only 13 when cast for the role of Mattie Ross, has since made a name for herself in the film and music industry. If you are looking to watch some of Steinfeld’s early acting successes, “True Grit” is the perfect film to do so while also serving as a good drama adaptation to the novel it is based on.

With an extensive list of Netflix releases, there will be no shortage of films to watch in the new year to serve as an escape from busy life.
