Jiri Kalfar NYFW Fall 2019
Czech based designer Jiri Kalfar’s collection for New York Fashion Week was influenced by his folk-art and rock’n’roll style and his vision of celebrating femininity through approaching the female form fluidly and with a lively infused palette of vivid colors and iconic prints. Kalfar’s delicate approach to his designs and intricate attention to the female form is reflective of his background as a trained ballet dancer. Kalfar distilled his whimsical, free flowing vision into a straightforward, evocative collection of classic shapes that he imbued with his own sense of fabrics and shapes to create a memorable collection.
Aesthetically, glamour and extravagance is innate to Jiri Kalfar. His collections revisit silhouettes of the past between short, seductive cuts, ruffled shoulders, and shear, satin pants, while remaining modern and setting new trends. The delicate, hyper-feminine collection, reminiscent of Kalfar’s world of ballet is a signature point of the collection.Highlights of the show include neutral tunics, with puffed sleeves and laced hems, one shouldered dresses whose prints clashed and juxtaposed one another, flowing transparent skirts, bold, red pant suits, and vintage-looking black dresses sewn of the finest silk. Each piece had some sort of novelty from red blazers coordinated with leopard print barrettes, or red sequined, neck plunging wrap dresses paired with red stiletto boots. And then there were other moments in the show that revealed an alternative side of the designer’s aesthetic. Opening the show, developing a calm aura that can be summed up as sensual, polished, and refined, the show’s end took a bewitching turn. Show stopping, waist-hugging dresses splashed with vibrant array soft sequins enriched with airy sleeves of twilight blue closed the diverse, dreamy collection.
The collection felt new, yet signature, with the alluring series of gowns of different, all flattering shapes and matching colored over-the-knee boots or heels. Simply dazzling is what I say to that. Kalfar’s sexy silhouettes and unexpected color combinations created a glamorous feel that was nothing short of modern. Between beautiful, soft trousers, and abundant designs of golds teamed arresting combinations of golds we can all agree that Kalfar created, in one word, beauty.
