Indonesia Now once again made its mark at New York Fashion Week: the Shows, showcasing seven remarkable collections that underscored the growing influence of Indonesian fashion on the global stage. From modest to modern designs, these collections captivated fashion enthusiasts with their rich cultural inspirations and innovative creativity.
Ivan Gunawan: A Tribute to Empress Maharani
Ivan Gunawan, known for his boundless creativity, presented the “Maharani” collection for Spring/Summer ’24. Drawing inspiration from the golden age of the Majapahit empire, this collection featured exquisite gold lace and embroidery. It paid homage to Empress Maharani, Tribhuawana Tunggadewi, who successfully led the Archipelago during that era. Ivan’s designs have graced Indonesian celebrities like Rossa, Luna Maya, Raline Shah, and Kris Dayanti.
Merdi Sihombing: ULOS, the Fusion of Tradition and Street Style
Merdi Sihombing’s “ULOS” collection was a testament to his commitment to culture, environment, and sustainability. Inspired by indigenous Batak culture from North Sumatra, Indonesia, ULOS merged traditional ulos patterns and natural coloring with a modern street style mindset. Vibrant indigo and fuchsia tones, coupled with impressive recycled fibers from Indonesian ocean plastic waste, showcased what Merdi coined as “GlamEthnic.” Celebrities like Yuni Shara, Krisdayanti, and Rossa are avid supporters of his brand.
Ayumi: “A Pop of Culture”
Ayumi’s “A Pop of Culture” collection was a vibrant fusion of Indonesian culture and pop music. Bright fuchsias, golds, limes, and eye-catching designs adorned chic, simple silhouettes. The brand aspires to give Indonesian designers the global recognition they deserve for their impeccable craftsmanship. Krisdayanti, Marion Jola, and Ayu TingTing are among the celebrity fans of Ayumi.
IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana: Preserving Tradition through Fashion
IKAT Indonesia by Didiet Maulana showcased the beauty of Indonesia’s traditional clothing silhouettes in the “Wiron” collection. Detailed pleats on the fabric celebrated the elegance of Indonesian women, drawing inspiration from the nation’s culture and natural landscapes. Andien, Bunga Citra Lestari, and Maudy Ayunda are notable supporters of this brand.
Ghea Fashion Studio: Celebrating Sumba’s Beauty and Textiles
Ghea Panggabean’s “MAMULI SUMBA” collection paid tribute to the enchanting beauty of Sumba, its women, and textiles. Bold colors, intricate patterns, and profound stories woven into Sumba’s textiles captured the essence of the island. Ghea’s designs, rooted in Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, have been worn by international figures like Janice Dickinson, Julia Roberts, and Cindy Crawford.
Amero X Livette: Fusion of Heritage and Modernity
Steven Ronaldo, Creative Director of Amero X Livette, presented “LAVANI by Amero Jewellery” during NYFW. The collection, featuring 17k gold jewelry, pays homage to Indonesian heritage while invoking a sense of timeless beauty.
