NEW YORK — British designer Christian Cowan honored New York City fashion with sequins, feathers, and a graphic “New York Loves Me” t-shirt. The collection set out to marry Old Hollywood glamour with a Gen Z attitude. The presentation at the One World Observatory, is designed as the “highest high-fashion show ever.”

“This just seemed like such a symbol of New York’s power and resilience. I moved to New York five years ago but…I always felt like a New Yorker before I even got here,” Cowan said. The collection is described as the intersection of taking the Lower East Side club kid and infusing it with the Upper East Side lady who lunches. “Last season was very much the party girl, this season is the gala girl,” he said. His pieces had fun in mind.

Christian Cowans Rise to Fame

At 25 years old, Christian Cowan has proved his natural abilities. Lady Gaga’s team took notice of his designs and his brand skyrocketed. He dressed Cardi B for the cover of her debut album, “Invasion of Privacy.” Lil Nas X was dressed by him at the 2019 MTV VMA awards with a ruffle shirt and sequin silver suit.

This season, the agenda was glitzy with feathers and sequins in abundance. There was a knitted zebra print dress. A sequined pink mini dress with feathered arms. It included bandeau tops and embellished body huggers. Blazer dresses covered in white feathers and evening staples taken to a different level.

“I always consider my collections as an amalgamation of pop culture of everything that I see. It’s everything from 1950s things that I picked up on…lots of 1980s kind of Guy Bourdin inspired pieces but then brought into a modern silhouette, Lots of sequins. Lots of crystals. Lots of feathers. Just having a lot of fun. It’s about maximalism. More is more.”

A Journalist’s Opinion

Candace Bushnell, American journalist and author of the bestselling Sex and the City franchise, was in attendance. She was the perfect mix of the glamorous images from the ‘80s and ‘90s and the young, exciting New York City nightlife. “Christian is high-octane glamour,” she told The Associated Press, “It’s what people want to wear when they’re out, and everybody wants to go out now.”

“Optimistic, friendly, tired, and introverted,” Cowan responded when asked to describe himself by V Magazine. “My brand is definitely an extrovert so it does all the talking for you.” The shimmering glamour of his shows clearly presents his dedication to self-expression and fun. “I want to be remembered for just spreading happiness and joy into people’s lives.”
