Will Denim Make A Red-Carpet Comeback?

Will Denim Make A Red-Carpet Comeback?

A tale as old as time, fashion has the tendency to be quite cyclical and repetitive in nature upon determining what the next trend or commonality in the industry will be. Denim, in all forms, is no exception as it undoubtedly continues to be one of the most versatile and necessary pieces to have in one’s closet. The optimal style of denim in fashion has been on the minds of many lately, whether it may be the potential return of a high-rise fit or a skinnier fit. But should we expect to see denim jeans make a comeback in red carpet looks?

Red carpet looks naturally vary depending on the premise of the event. Meaning a celebrity wouldn’t wear the same look to the MTV VMAs as they would to the Oscars simply because the dress code criteria differs. Yet, it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see one wear denim in any form to the MTV VMAs, as it’s been known for being a more relaxed and casual atmosphere in terms of the red carpet. A manner of thinking such as this is the norm for smaller Hollywood events, but hasn’t necessarily trickled over to larger ones.

Award shows and other red-carpet events are historically viewed as stuffy, up-tight affairs in which strict dress coding is established and must be adhered to. No better examples of this are the Academy Awards and the Cannes Film Festival, the latter of which has had extremely strict guidelines for dress over the years. Actor Cole Domingo has become a notable figure for his red carpet looks, namely due to how his style challenges the age-old archetype of men wearing black tuxedos – opting to add flairs and character in what he wears. But more push back from celebrities has occurred as well – in favor of either pushing boundaries in style or simply opting for a casual look.

Fashion icon Zendaya sported a look from Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 2020 ready-to-wear collection two weeks ago at Essence’s Black Women in Hollywood Awards. The look featured a sheer, silver corset top with matching jewelry, accessories and was paired with baggy, low rise denim jeans. Zendaya’s choice of pieces, while working cohesively, counters some current perspectives in fashion media. Many believe low rise, baggy jeans are on the decline and will be replaced by the high-rise skinny jeans on some recent runways. Not to mention the more relaxed essence of the look as well as the updated version of 2000s red carpet denim.

To sum up 2000s red carpet looks in just a few words, would be to say simultaneously took a back seat approach but also enjoyed experimenting. Some wore vests over tank tops while others opted for juicy couture tracksuits with UGG boots. But many celebrities enjoyed wearing denim jeans repeatedly on the red carpet for numerous events – even larger scale movie premieres; it was almost as if there was this momentary lapse in fashion during which comfort was prioritized more so than excessive glamour. Laid-back looks featuring denim are likely to be favored today as well, mainly due to the preference of many to choose a look that balances comfort and vanity.
