The Virgin Suicides and Marc Jacobs
Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs’ event of print, fashion, and femininity.
On June 8, Marc Jacobs’ Bookmarc hosted an immersive book signing event showcasing The Virgin Suicides and Sofia Coppola Archive. The West Village bookstore welcomed Sofia Coppola’s devoted fanbase to honor the director’s distinctive feminine sensibility. Attendees filled the block, dressed in Coppola’s visual aesthetic—grunge blended with lace, softness, and edgy allure.
Originally published in 1993 by Jeffrey Eugenides, The Virgin Suicides was reimagined six years later through Sofia Coppola’s lens. As both writer and director, she transformed the novel into a cinematic work of art, solidifying her poetic style. In honor of the film’s 25th anniversary, Coppola partnered with Mack Publishing to release an editorial-style imprint Important Flowers. Curated by Coppola herself, the volume features Corinne Day’s set photographs, capturing the surreal, dreamy tone that permeates her work across media.
Though this marked their first print-focused collaboration, Coppola and Jacobs have shared a creative friendship since the early 1990s, when Jacobs was at Perry Ellis and Coppola was beginning her career. Their relationship blends shared aesthetics—ladylike refinement contrasted with grunge influences. As seen on many eager fans, Heaven by Marc Jacobs released their 2021 capsule collection featuring Day’s photography, benefiting LGBTQ+ mental health organizations—an extension of Jacobs’s ongoing support for queer youth and mental health advocacy.
Bookmarc, curated by Marc Jacobs and his creative team, explores the intersection of literature, photography, and film within fashion. Through the brand’s new extension, Jacobs’ highlights the cultural bridge of fashion and print. At the event, that relationship of medias and friendship came to life. The cohesive styling and printed garments worn by attendees reflected the Coppola-Jacobs universe: a balance of feminine bliss and grit that continues to shape contemporary fashion and storytelling.
Further celebrating the film’s 25th anniversary, more events will be held in New York and France. The MoMA will be screening the beloved film with a Q&A with Coppola June 14. The vast fanbase of Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola have much to look forward to this summer, cherishing each other’s impact on creatively translating the grittiness of femininity.
