Son Jung Wan SS27 Is Ever Becoming
Son Jung Wan unveiled her Spring 2027 collection, “Ever Becoming,” on Saturday, September 12, at the IAC Building in Chelsea during New York Fashion Week. This season, the designer looked beyond a single moment, exploring fashion as an ongoing evolution connecting the past, present,and future.
At the center of Ever Becoming is the idea that growth does not require abandoning what came before. Instead, Son Jung Wan draws from the house’s established design language while considering where it can go next. Heritage becomes a foundation rather than a limitation, allowing each season to represent another stage in the brand’s evolution.
That progression is reflected immediately through color. Aqua Cade introduces a sense of vitality and optimism, while Raw Milk represents purity and the foundations of the brand’s history. Purple Haze brings depth and creative energy into the present before Fiery Red pushes the collection forward with passion and a rebellious edge.
Together, the shades create a visual journey through different stages of transformation while giving elements of the Son Jung Wan archive a contemporary perspective.
Fabrication adds another dimension to the story. Liquid Silk brings fluidity and a soft luster to the collection, creating movement across the body. Transparent layers described as “Sheer Luxury” overlap to symbolize the simultaneous presence of past, present, and future.
Cut Jacquard Lace emphasizes the intricate craftsmanship that has long been part of the designer’s vocabulary, while Cut-Fringe introduces constant movement. High-gloss Patent Leather provides a sharper contrast, bringing confidence and a distinctly futuristic energy to the collection.
These contrasts—softness against structure, transparency against dimension and heritage against experimentation—capture the larger message behind Ever Becoming. Son Jung Wan does not present transformation as a dramatic break from the past. Instead, evolution happens gradually, with familiar elements continually reconsidered and pushed into new territory.
I had the pleasure of speaking of Son Jung Wan about her newest ss27 collection during NYFW week,
Zoey: What was the starting point or inspiration behind your Spring/Summer 2027 collection?
Son Jung Wan: The starting point was the idea of continuous evolution. I called the collection Ever Becoming because I wanted to reflect on the journey of the brand,where we began, where we are now and where we are going. I believe there is beauty in the process of becoming rather than reaching one final destination. I wanted to honor my history and the heritage of the brand while still looking forward with confidence and ambition.
Zoey: Color and movement have always played an important role in your work. How did you approach the color palette and silhouettes this season?
Son Jung Wan: Color was very important because each shade represents a different part of that journey. Aqua Cade represents vitality, optimism and new possibilities, while Raw Milk connects to beginnings and our heritage. Purple Haze brings a sense of emotional depth and creative energy, and Fiery Red represents passion, confidence, and the future.
Movement also comes through the fabrics and textures. Liquid silk creates softness and fluidity, while sheer layers give the collection dimension. Cut-fringe creates movement around the body, and then patent leather brings a completely different energy—something stronger, bolder and more fearless. I really enjoyed bringing those contrasts together.
Zoey: When you were designing this collection, what did you want a woman to feel when she puts on these pieces?
Son Jung Wan: I want her to feel confident, strong and excited about who she is becoming. The collection is about transformation, but it is also about carrying your history with you. You don’t have to leave your past behind in order to move forward. I wanted the clothes to give women that feeling of possibility and confidence while still allowing them to feel completely themselves.
Zoey: Was there one look, fabric, or design detail in the collection that became especially meaningful to you during the creative process?
Son Jung Wan: The combination of sheer layers and cut-fringe became especially meaningful because they really express the idea behind Ever Becoming. The transparency allows different layers to exist together, almost like the past, present, and future overlapping, while the fringe is constantly moving. For me, that movement represents the idea that we are never standing still. We are always evolving and becoming something new.
The Spring 2027 collection also arrives as Son Jung Wan continues expanding internationally. The Seoul-based fashion house currently operates 54 stores across Asia and has 110 points of sale globally, with its portfolio spanning SON JUNG WAN womenswear, SJ Wani Juniors, WANINI menswear and SJW GOLF athleisure.
With Ever Becoming, Son Jung Wan celebrates what has already been built while keeping her attention firmly on what comes next. The collection ultimately makes its strongest statement through that sense of movement: fashion, much like identity, is never finished. It is always becoming.
