Lizzo becomes first Plus-Sized Black Woman on Cover of Vogue

The “Truth Hurts” singer gave us elegance and grace in the publication’s Oct. 2020 issue. Dolled up in a top bun, red dress and shiny jewelry—she certainly came to serve looks.

“I am the first big black woman on the cover of @voguemagazine. The first black anything feels overdue. But our time has come,” she says in an Instagram post. “To all my black girls, if someone like you hasn’t done it yet—BE THE FIRST.”

Lizzo revealed some excerpts of her interview in multiple Instagram posts. From discussing the benefits of a Black woman for vice president, how Black women often get dropped from the conversation (such as Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor), and how she’s “body-normative” instead of body-positive.

She also discusses her struggle to be understood by music-industry executives at the beginning of her career.

According to the Detroit-born artist, “This is the blackest and brownest @voguemagazine ever.” Next month’s issue will feature topics about voting, vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris, fall fashion and more.
