Best Dressed Men At The 2024 Met Gala
The best dressed men at this year’s Met Gala proved men’s fashion is anything but simply a conventional black tuxedo. Women’s fashion is regularly at the forefront for the biggest night in fashion, but the 2024 Met Gala proved some male attendees weren’t shy about carrying the torch this time around. Female attendees historically steal the spotlight on those iconic stairs all thanks to the theatrics and anticipation of their looks, with male attendees taking a back seat. But this year, some male attendees broke this status quo.
Bad Bunny – Maison Margiela by John Galliano
2024 Met Gala co-chair, Bad Bunny stepped onto the carpet in full force. The custom Maison Margiela by John Galliano look is seemingly a reference to the character Count Axel, from the “Garden of Time” short story the Met Gala theme is based on this year. With Margiela’s trademark deconstruction in the form of contrast stitching, you get the sense of going back in time or the time it took to create the look itself. The essence of the look are the final stages of a flower’s life before the garden (i.e. Garden of Time) dies and falls to ruins. Hints of red peaking out on the pants could represent a flower’s prime – when it was alive and flourishing. Bad Bunny’s heritage was close to his heart, upon the inclusion of Puerto Rico’s national flower in a bouquet he held.
Coleman Domingo – Willy Chavarria
Coleman Domingo’s red-carpet appearances have been previously heralded for the intent he plays in executing a look, and this only persisted at this year’s Met Gala. The custom Willy Chavarria look featured debonair suiting, with 1940s Chicano culture influences as well. Purposeful intent and substance within this look is evident in multiple aspects, but specifically for its references. The cape trailing behind Domingo served as a poignant reference to the late Chadwick Boseman’s look he wore for the 2018 Met Gala “Heavenly Bodies,” but also nods to the signature style of Met Gala mainstay the late Andre Leon Talley. Colored contacts worn by Domingo added a certain dimensionality to an otherwise expected look from a male attendee.
Lewis Hamilton – Burberry
Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton’s Met Gala look was the epitome of commitment and observance of those who came before you. The custom Burberry look featured a coat styled in a cape-like fashion and intricate embroidery. According to Hamilton, he drew inspiration for his look upon research and came across an 18th century gardener. The gardener came from Africa to Wales during slavery and became the first Black gardener in Wales. Hamilton’s tribute to the gardener’s adversity and hardships were the driving force behind this look.
Barry Keoughan – Burberry
Barry Keoughan, also wearing a custom Burberry look, executed a contemporary Victorian era look. The Saltburn star and Burberry’s global ambassador sported an espresso crushed velvet suit with a white tie neck shirt; he accessorized the look with a black top hat, two brooches on the lapel, and a pocket watch attached to his waistcoat. Keoghan and girlfriend Sabrina Carpenter, who wore custom Oscar de la Renta, arrived separately, but standing next to each other, it appeared as though their looks were inspired by Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter.
Wisdom Kaye – Robert Wun
Influencer turned fashion mainstay Wisdom Kaye made his grand Met Gala debut in the ultimate custom Robert Wun ensemble. A bolder take on this year’s theme and dress code, the inspiration behind the look is the red rose – namely the decay of a red rose overtime. The burn marks on Kaye’s overcoat and accompanying hat assist in bringing said vision to life, but also one which so few designers would dare to achieve based on the thematic premise.
