The Weeknd Responds to the Grammy Nominations

Since the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2021 Grammy Awards on Tuesday, things turned left for some celebrities. A conversation among celebrities, pop critics, and fans surfaced on the internet about the Weeknd not getting any nominations.

The Canadian pop star released his latest album, “After Hours in March”. After Hours, sounds like the kind of album that would bring the Weekend nominations for the Grammy Awards, but it didn’t. Even with the second single, “Blinding Lights” being the biggest hit of the year. Fans and even music critics loved it. So why didn’t the Weekend get any nominations for his work? The Weeknd was robbed out of six nominations that he should have gotten from the amazing album released this year. Receiving zero nominations not only shocked his fans including himself. The Weeknd Tweeted, “The Grammys remain corrupt. You owe me, my fans, and the industry transparency”

The Grammys are known for not giving nominations to celebrities based on their hard work. This is a shocker to all of us because, with all the success After Hours received, it deserves to be nominated.  According to Rolling Stone, Recording Academy Chair and Interim President/CEO Harvey Mason Jr. made a statement about the issue. “We understand that the Weeknd is disappointed at not being nominated. I was surprised and can empathize with what he’s feeling. His music this year was excellent, and his contributions to the music community and broader world are worthy of everyone’s admiration”.

The Weeknd not being nominated for any awards doesn’t make any sense. People thought it related to him being able to perform at the Super Bowl and not the Grammys, but that is not the case. Harvey Mason Jr. stated, “We would have loved to have him also perform on the Grammy stage the weekend before the Super Bowl, unfortunately, every year, there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists”. “To be clear, voting in all categories ended well before The Weeknd’s performance at the Super Bowl was announced, so in no way could it have affected the nomination process”.

The Weekend not being nominated for any awards at the Grammys is a bummer. At least he and fans know what a great artist he is especially what a great album After Hours is.
