‘Twisters’ Sequel Takes Theaters By Storm
The action-packed disaster film Twisters hit theaters on July 19th and has already been met with great success. Variety reports that, “the movie, a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic “Twister,” has collected a massive $80.5 million from 4,151 North American theaters in its debut.” Starring the insanely talented Daisy Edgar-Jones, playing Kate Cooper, and Glen Powell, playing Tyler Owens, the two tornado-chasers have a rivalry that slowly turns into a collaborative effort when they realize that they have more in common than they thought.
The original 1996 film, Twister, gave a new meaning to disaster films and swept any other films during the time in terms of success. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie was “a box office juggernaut, opening to $41 million ($82 million in today’s dollars) and ending in its run with $494.5 million globally ($992.08 million today).” The original cast starring Helen Hunt, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, and the late Bill Paxton are just a few actors to name that made this cast nothing short of stellar. Powell gave a beautiful acknowledgement to Bill Paxton in a recent social media post, stating, “a great friend of mine who saw poetry in the natural world. His boots are impossible to fill but this life is all about chasing the greats.”
Glen Powell is becoming a name that more and more people are starting to recognize. With starring roles in films such as Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, and Hidden Figures, fans are eagerly waiting to see what his next project will be. The British actress Daisy Edgar-Jones was first most known for her outstanding performance in the 2020 Hulu series Normal People, alongside Paul Mescal. Since then, she has starred in successful films such as Where the Crawdads Sing, Fresh, and Under the Banner of Heaven.
So far, Twisters has received nothing but amazing reviews and feedback from fans—except for one thing. The final scene had fans very frustrated and disappointed, as they were expecting a romantic finale kiss from Powell and Edgar-Jones. While this ending was in the original script, Steven Spielberg was actually the one who advised them not to do so. People Magazine reported that Powell stated, “it’s not about them finding love. It’s returning Kate to the thing that she loves, which is storm chasing. So that’s what you have at the end of the movie.” Edgar-Jones shared that because of the way the film ended, there is now a feeling that there is a continuation waiting to be had and their story is not finished. Would this possibly mean another film is in the works? We’ll just have to wait to find out.
