Symba Says Don’t Make “One Wrong Move” On FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga
FX’s The Drop: A Snowfall Saga presents a riveting recreation of early ’90s Los Angeles, featuring a high-octane soundtrack to match. This week, FX and 20th Century Studios release another high-quality entry from the soundtrack, sharing “One Wrong Move,” a menacing banger from “Exit Wounds,” the sixth episode of the series. “One Wrong Move” features vocals from Demario “Symba” Davis, the acclaimed Bay Area rapper, who plays “Tip Toe” in the series.
Produced by the soundtrack’s brain trust of lyricist Jason “Problem” Martin and producer Larrance “Rance 1500” Dopson, with assistance from Seige Monstracity, “One Wrong Move” is a paranoid slice of G-funk, echoing the spirit of sinister genre classics like Snoop & Dre’s “Deep Cover” and Suga Free’s “Are U Bullsh*ttin.” Built around a massive drum loop and sumptuous bassline, the song is a seductive, yet foreboding missive, daring opps to make a move, just to see what happens: “Nobody move, nobody get hurt, one wrong move have your friend on a shirt.”
“One Wrong Move” is only the latest musical highlight from The Drop to hit streaming services. The Drop made headlines with “LA Theme Song,” the show’s main title theme, featuring an unheard verse from the late, great Nipsey Hussle. During the season, FX and Hollywood Records released four songs by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, the acclaimed L.A. rapper, who plays aspiring rapper Artillery in the series. Recent single “Back To The Hood” features a sample of Chaka Khan’s classic “Ain’t Nobody,” and the minimalist “There Goes The Neighborhood” welcomes a guest appearance from L.A. legend Suga Free. In September, alongside the series premiere, FX released “Rydah” and “Officer Blackman,” two songs that illustrate the series’ dedication to nailing the prevailing sound and aesthetic that made the West Coast scene legendary. Most recently, The Drop released R&B showstopper “Sinful Obsession,” featuring vocals from award-winning singer and actress Denée Benton and piano from 1500 or Nothin’ artist/songwriter and GRAMMY-winner Jason Taylor
