Sheff G Has ‘Weight On Me: The Album.’
Ever since he emerged on the scene as a teenager at the beginning of the Brooklyn drill boom, Sheff G has been a fixture in New York’s rap scene, bringing his perspective to life with raw emotion, gritty realism, and lilting melodies. Today, the East Flatbush native returns with Weight On Me: The Album, the new soundtrack to NYC’s historic summer. Released as Sheff continues his journey of accountability from behind bars, the new album mixes heavy subject matter and contemplative introspection with airy summer anthems and gritty street stories. Blessed with instrumentals from Sheff’s Winners Circle associate and longtime creative partner Great John, Weight On Me: The Album sparkles with glistening keys and is lifted by chirruping vocal samples, providing a hefty backdrop for Sheff to flex his vocal muscles. His sonorous baritone is more expressive than ever, projecting confidence and pain in equal measure, is Sheff slides into pockets with lilting melodies.
Along with the album, Sheff teams up with G Herbo for “Ventilator,” highlighted by a new music video that releases at 3pm ET on Sheff’s YouTube channel. The song supplies Sheff and Herbo with an insistent, siren-laden instrumental, delivering a sharp message for any challengers who want smoke. Sheff kicks things off with an ice cold hook, before making room for G Herbo to breath fire on the first verse: “Hop out a new coupe, drop in another truck/And if he ever fall, I’m a pick brodie up.” Sheff ditches his usual melodies on his closing verse, instead stacking triplets about his official status in the streets: “Gettin’ to the money fast/Humble we ain’t gotta brag.” In the video, Sheff and Herb link up at the club for a night off, linking with beautiful women and fellow brethren along the way.
The new album is home to recent singles like soulful mission statement “Eat Work Pray” and uber-confident opener “HIM,” making room for plenty of new songs that speak on his perspective as a kingpin and community leader. “Count Me Out” uses a sparkling Great John beat to speak out against his doubters, while the sensuous “My Love” finds Sheff dancing around a chopped vocal sample with uncommon tenderness. The Winners Circle head honcho also goes toe-to-toe with Philadelphia rapper Skrilla on the fiery “Cashing Out.” By the time Sheff reaches the closing “All In,” Sheff has demonstrated a newfound maturity, reflecting his role as a leader for his community and a provider for his family. A pioneer of his home borough’s drill explosion, Sheff G first began making music while he was still in high school. He quickly garnered buzz with his debut track “4 Them Racks”, a release that led to his 2017 breakout moment with explosive underground hit, “No Suburban,” later followed-up in 2020 with the Gold-certified “No Suburban Pt. 2.” Rocking pigtail braids and a Puma tracksuit, Sheff popularized a style entirely his own, quite pronounced amid a flurry of EP releases, which led to his critically-lauded debut studio album One and Only. An undeniable trailblazer in the genre space, Sheff quickly rose to prominence, boasting a flurry of Platinum and Gold-certified records across his projects and up to 2024’s Proud of Myself.
