Rum.Gold Ask ‘Is There Anybody Home?’

Today, experimental R&B singer-songwriter rum.gold releases Disc 1 of Is There Anybody Home? — out now via Independent Co. — completing his two-part album in full. The project was introduced in reverse: Disc 2 arrived first, dropping listeners into the aftermath of a fractured relationship. Now, Disc 1 rewinds to the beginning, tracing the fragile, intoxicating early stages of connection—the moments of surrender, intimacy, and self-reflection that come before heartbreak. Together, the two discs form a sweeping, nonlinear meditation on love, vulnerability, and emotional reckoning. Across six tracks, rum.gold pairs lush, immersive production with his signature falsetto and diaristic lyricism, adding new emotional depth to the full project. To mark the release, he also shares a live performance video for the focus track “Another Life”. The intimate, striking visual continues a theme he introduced with the campaign’s first single, “Is It Something I Said” — a recurring image of a giant pile of clothes speaks to what we carry with us: inherited memories, generational patterns, and the emotional weight we pass down without realizing it. “Another Life” puts his raw vocals and emotional delivery front and center, cementing the song as the heart of the album. Together, the two parts of Is Anybody Home? form rum.gold’s most ambitious project to date. By presenting the story out of order, rum.gold invites listeners to reconstruct the emotional timeline themselves, deepening the resonance of each moment. Whereas Disc 2 grapples with disillusionment and emotional fallout, Disc 1 offers a portrait of hope, risk, and the quiet unraveling that follows, completing the album’s full narrative arc. Anchored by previously released singles “Asleep at the Wheel” and “Walking Dead,” Disc 1 examines love as a cycle of memory, feeling, and perspective.
Known for blending soul and R&B into emotionally-charged soundscapes, rum.gold continues to transform personal experiences into universally resonant narratives. Since his arrival on the scene in 2018, he has illuminated the alt-R&B world with his soulful voice and distinct sonic style, earning praise from The New Yorker, Billboard, Wonderland, Okayplayer, Office, THEM, Complex, Paper, The FADER, Pigeons & Planes, and more. Beginning by uploading tracks anonymously on SoundCloud, rum.gold quickly gained recognition for his haunting falsetto and introspective songwriting, often exploring themes of identity, family, and personal growth. His early projects—including yaRn (2019) and aiMless (2020)—set the stage for his nuanced storytelling and sonic minimalism, paving the way for his acclaimed debut album Thicker Than Water (2021), which examined the complexities of chosen versus biological family. His project U Street Anthology (2023) further expanded his artistic scope, serving as a powerful tribute to his Washington, D.C. roots and the city’s Black cultural legacy, while weaving in his personal journey of healing and reconnection.
rum.gold is currently on his North American headline tour in support of Is There Anybody Home?, including sold-out shows in NYC and LA, and marking his most expansive live run to date. Bringing the album’s emotional depth to the stage, the tour showcases his ability to translate its intimate, vulnerable moments into a powerful and immersive live experience.
