Reneé Rapp Releases Alternative Pop Anthem, Leave Me Alone
Reneé Rapp releases an alternative pop anthem, Leave Me Alone, teasing her upcoming album Bite Me, expected August 1st. Differing from her previous emotional ballads on the Snow Angel album, Leave Me Alone is challenging the definition of pop by incorporating edgy and carefree liberation with scandalous fun. New album, unexpected surprises?
Leave Me Alone does not require the emotive delivery Rapp once highlighted in her Mean Girls’ role as Regina George in 2024. This rendition of hard-hitting punk-pop has nothing to prove. The bass of the drum is demanding; garnering attention from the very first second. However, if that was not captivating enough, Rapp’s introductory line, “I’m a real bad girl but a real good kisser”, will steal the show.
Throughout the song, Rapp repeats “Leave me alone, b*itch, I wanna have fun”, which embodies the rebellious undertone of the song and caters towards her Gen Z audience, ranging from teenagers to mid 20’s. This line is repeated after Rapp emphasizes rules or constraints given, such as “Sign a hundred NDAs but I still say something”, which indicates that she is no longer upholding a false image that belittles her.
Fans are speculating that the production of Leave Me Alone is a clapback towards her departure from The Sex Lives of College Girls, where she plays Leighton Murray. While Rapp has neither confirmed nor denied, her line “I took my sex life with me, now the show ain’t f*ckin,” seems to indicate the downfall of the show. It is clear that, in her departure, Rapp is shifting her focus from acting to pursuing music entirely.
However, if this song is the refinement of her brand, Rapp proves herself to be a powerhouse with her high-octave hook, embellishing her vocal abilities. Rapp includes lines, such as “T-t-t-take it off”, which accentuates the fun and highly energetic elements of the piece. Although Reneé Rapp has proven herself to hit impossible runs and ferocious belts, Leave Me Alone is a stand-alone song that reinforces self-expression over delivery of full vocal range. Therefore, Rapp does not need to showcase her repertoire in one song.
Overall, this statement piece speaks for itself. Between the unrelenting beat and the fierce lyrics, Reneé Rapp is breaking the chain of limitations and flowing unapologetically into her independence as an artist. This song deserves nothing less than a rating of 5/5. Eager to see the star in action?
