Nikita Lev Releases New Single: “Nihilistic Baby”

Yesterday, October 10th, marks the release of Nikita Lev’s new single “Nihilistic Baby.” The track is set to appear on her upcoming debut album. Lev describes the song as being about “someone who left her alone with feelings that would not [do the same].” These feelings are palpable in lyrics like “you lied to me before you left/you said I’d see you again/anything to give you an edge/but/no one could survive your scorched bridge,” as well as in the staccato guitar strums building the tension, releasing in the second to last verse. In this section, Lev sings, “I hate what you did/I hate what you said/I hate that I care and that you’re indifferent.” This is the heart of the song that is the most relatable to listeners. While Lev is only 19, this is a romantic experience many will experience in some form when looking for love.

The delivery of those lines remind me of Taylor Swift, but I can’t quite put my finger on how or why. However, I do know that Lev has credited Swift as one of her biggest musical inspirations. It’s exciting to see someone beginning to grow through her music and self expression in the way that Lev is. As an avid listener and lover of music, she decided about two years ago to begin the journey of joining the conversation with her experiences. In that time her star has begun to rise. At the beginning of this year, she released her first single “Elegance” which has almost 500,000 streams on Spotify. As she continues to grow into adulthood, she’s someone to keep an eye out for.
