Nick Freeze: “I Do” Single Review

Nick Freeze: “I Do” Single Review

On November 19th, South Central-Los Angeles native and rapper, Nick Freeze, released the video for his latest single, “I Do”. The song and video are both nostalgic reminders of a time gone by in West Coast Hip Hop. Even so, Nick Freeze’s music is still a look into the future for this style of music.

About Nick Freeze

Nick Freeze is a young rapper from South-Central Los Angeles that has been at it for more than half a decade. Persistence, determination and clarity are just a few words that describe his music. Storytelling of hardship and striving through living in hard conditions are also some prevalent themes in his lyrics.

Freeze’s most popular song/video on YouTube, “Don’t Know feat Saeed”, has almost six thousand views – and its no wonder. The video is cinema-esque and depicts Freeze doing seemingly illegal dealings with his crew. The song is also substantial complex with intricate lyrics, gang violence, and recreational drug use.

“I Do”

Freeze’s new single is a braggadocios slapper. Pulling influence from J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Drake, his music has an air of competition to it. Competition is an inherent element in the rap game and Nick Freeze sounds prepared to compete.

“Heading to the top so I’m getting by you, and I will never stop because I’m nothing like you. No they don’t really do the type of things that I do”. The level of braggadocio is on par with Jay-Z’s.

The video for “I Do” is also simply menacing. With color scheme of heavy red and black and white, the video depicts Freeze as an evil villain. Him and his crew look as if they are plotting their route to the top. If Nick Freeze continues to create with the kind of tenacity he exhibits here, I see no reason why he wouldn’t get there.
