Nelly Furtado Announces She’ll “Step Away From Performance”
The singer of chart-toppers “I’m Like a Bird” and “Turn Off The Light” wrote in an Instagram post that “I have decided to step away from performance for the foreseeable future and pursue some other creative and personal endeavours that I feel would better suit this next phase of my life.”
It’s not the first time the singer has transformed herself. Starting with a trip-hop-inspired album, “Woah, Nelly!” in 2000, she later released a Portuguese-inspired album, “Folklore,” and an album in Spanish, “Mi Plan,” in 2009.
After releasing her fifth album, “The Spirit Indestructible,” Furtado split with her management and released her sixth studio album, “The Ride,” in 2017 under her own label, Nelstar Entertainment. She released another album, “7,” in 2024.
“My artist self felt so actualized,” she wrote of her beginnings in 2000. “Twenty-five years later, my music has reached a whole new generation of fans and I couldn’t be happier about that… to have so many people rediscovering my music has been surreal and joyful. It’s been so fun embracing this opportunity, getting out on stages again and seeing up close, the true lasting power of good music,” she continued. “It’s made me really believe in magic.”
In her long and storied career, she won a Grammy, a Latin Grammy, ten Juno Awards, one BRIT Award, one Billboard Music Award, one MTV Europe Music Award, one World Music Award, and three Much Music Video Awards.
Now she’s ready to take a new creative approach. Whatever it is, it’ll be sure to awe and inspire as her singing previously did. She wished “to the new generation of artists, many years of fruitful and passionate performance.”
“I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career,” she said. “I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”
