Mariah Carey receives first-ever BET Ultimate Icon Award
Mariah Carey was honored with her first-ever BET Award, the Ultimate Icon Award, on June 9th at the 2025 BET Awards.
Notably known for her impressive whistle-tones and raw vocals, Mariah Carey has been a revolutionary voice since the release of her first self-titled album, Mariah Carey.
On this album, released on June 12th of 1990, Carey produced her discovery single, Vision of Love. This song became her first number one single when she was only seventeen years old. Vision of Love is a slow-jam melody, catered towards finding true companionship in a partner.
“I had a vision of love, and it was all that you’ve given to me,” Carey writes.
Before Carey accepted her award, she received high praises from icon Busta Rhymes, referring to her as “timeless greatness.”
In her speech, Carey expresses her gratitude for being granted with such a prestigious award. “My life and career have been quite the adventure,” Carey expresses, but shares one of her lessons as a musical trailblazer, that “Life is far too short to live for anyone else’s approval.”
From her first album, Vision of Love, Carey produced several albums within her career, including studio albums, remixes, studio albums, anniversary celebrations and much more.
Some of her most influential number one hits include All I want for Christmas is You, which resurfaces after every Holiday, My All, Fantasy and Emotions to name a few.
