Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Lupe Fiasco‘s prodigious rap talent was apparent from the instant he emerged from the Chicago streets, impressing fans across the country with his dense wordplay and powerful metaphors. The rapper evolved from a fan favorite into a mainstream phenomenon when he dropped Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor, his debut album, earning the young rapper critical accolades, commercial success, and award recognition. On September 19th, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor celebrated its 20th anniversary, solidifying its status as a hip-hop classic and as the first salvo in one of the genre’s most fascinating careers. In honor of this milestone, Lupe partnered with Warner Classics to release 4K-remastered versions of videos for fan favorite hits “Kick, Push,” “Daydreamin'” ft. Jill Scott, and “I Gotcha,” as well as a brand new lyric video for “Kick, Push.”
With the production mainly handled by his close friend Soundtrakk, with contributions from heavy-hitters like The Neptunes and Needlz, the album introduced the rap game to Lupe’s unimpeachable pen. Earning 4 Grammy Nominations, including Best Rap Album, Food & Liquor produced several of Lupe’s most-enduring tracks, each showing a different flavor of his artistry.
The soulful, Soundtrakk-produced skateboard coming-of-age anthem “Kick, Push” earned two Grammy nominations, for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance, and reached #78 on the Billboard Hot 100. Third single “Daydreamin” ft. Jill Scott earned the Grammy Award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2008 ceremony, rewarding Lupe’s realistic, socially aware, and ultimately hopeful bars. Also notable were the Neptunes-produced “I Gotcha,” which charted in the UK and on Billboard’s Hot Hip-Hop/R&B Songs chart, “Pressure,” featuring a verse from Jay-Z, and “The Cool,” which looked forward to Lupe’s rapturously acclaimed second album, Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool.
Earlier this year, Lupe Fiasco performed the album in full for fans across the country during the “Lupe Fiasco Presents: Food & Liquor 20th Anniversary Tour,” featuring a sold out show at Pier 17 in New York City and a rare hometown show in Chicago. Lupe released live versions of “Kick, Push” and “Daydreamin'” earlier this year, when he shared Lupe Fiasco x Nu Deco Ensemble Live From Miami Beach, a one-of-a-kind live album, featuring some of his most beloved music performed with the backing of a full orchestra This fall, Lupe is back on tour, co-headlining the Back To Basics Tour with gymclassheroes., featuring special guest B.o.B. In 2025, Lupe made noise with the release of Samurai DX, the deluxe edition of Lupe Fiasco’s critically acclaimed 2024 album Samurai. The new expansion features two songs from the Samurai sessions, the self-produced recent single “SOS” and the Soundtrakk-helmed “High Note,” plus remixes of original album highlights “Samurai,” “Palaces,” and “Bigfoot.” Featuring vocals by Troy Tyler, the new remixes add a fresh perspective to Lupe’s rhymes, changing up the style without sacrificing the soul. The record’s second half, and the vinyl version’s Side B, includes instrumental versions of the DX‘s five vocal tracks. In the Spring, Lupe perfomed a special performance at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is a visiting professor teaching “Rap Theory and Practice,” in May. His MIT concert formed part of “GHOTIING MIT: Public Art,” an innovative project by the List Visual Arts Center that turns campus installations into live sonic experiences. Offstage, Lupe further cemented his academic credentials by joining the faculty of the prestigious Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University.
20 years on, Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor holds up as a classic, representing a high water mark for combining lyricism with commercial appeal, and standing out as one of the best albums in Chicago hip-hop history.
