Interview with LoSmoothe
LoSmoothe music style bridges midwestern vocal grit with a smooth, slow-burning Southern R&B sensibility.
What does contemporary R&B sound like once you’ve lived a little life, experienced real heartbreak, and learned the true cost of choosing the wrong love?
LoSmoothe answers that question definitively on his EP If I Luv’d You.
When did you first realize music was something serious for you?
Back in high school, I was the annoying kid beating on the breakfast table while my homeboys freestyled. Music was already flowing through my body then. I was really shy but finally started to freestyle along with the others. I started in a rap group in 2010 and signed my first independent deal as a rap trio.
How did growing up between Chicago and Sugar Land shape your sound?
I moved to Chicago at the end of 2024. The music scene is pretty tough, still learning how to navigate and make connections. So I would say I am still transitioning and adjusting.
What made you lean into R&B over other genres?
I knew I loved R&B while I was in the rap trio. I wrote all the hooks for our songs, the music felt better to me through harmonizing. We ended up wanting to do our own thing. I stepped away from music and returned to it in 2017 writing full R&B songs while learning how to sing.
What inspired the concept behind If I Luv’d You?
I wanted people to feel all the feels and every emotion through love, heartbreak, sex and pain.
How personal was this project for you to make?
It’s been 6 years since I dropped a complete project so this one means a lot to me. All the ups and downs so I am very proud of this one.
Why was vulnerability important on this EP?
I feel being vulnerable is the best way to connect with people. I am sure each song on the project someone can relate to the lyrics.
What message did you want people to take from “Every Day Is Your Day”?
Everyday is your day to celebrate your better half and treating them the way they deserve to be treated each day without relying on holidays to celebrate them.
How did the collaboration with Kirko Bangz on “The Woodlands” come together?
Kirk is a good friend of mine, we were at the house chilling and kicking it while listening to some beats. I had a concept in mind that I recorded and Kirk filled the lines. The Woodlands is a city outside of Houston where we are from and it’s basically about taking our dates away from the normal vibe to an exclusive vibe outside of the city.
What was your favorite song to create on the project and why?
If I were to choose a favorite it would be because it’s mainly about me finding myself and realizing what’s most important to me through love.
How do visuals like “Fool For Love” and “In This Lifetime” help tell your story?
Fool for Love visual is about someone who is head over heels for another person but discovers they were being played and not loved equally. Someone wanting a future but the other party not seeing the same future. In this lifetime visual is just a vibe basically me realizing who I am so I’m kinda feeling myself.
What does opening for MAJOR. mean to you at this point in your career?
Opening for MAJOR. was a great opportunity and perfect timing aligning with my EP release. One of my biggest shows was in a region I am still transitioning to. It was a great look for my career to help expand my artistry here in Chicago.
After this EP drops, what’s next for LoSmoothe?
LoSmoothe is looking for show opportunities, radio play, interviews and anything relative to pushing my latest release. I’m always ready to create so writing music or having concepts in mind never stops.
