MORE ABOUT LEONELLE BELOW:

Leonelle used to believe pursuing her childhood dream of becoming a pop star required her to be perfect. But navigating her early 20s showed her the only music worth making came from embracing imperfection and finding her true voice—in learning to fully accept herself as she is and presenting that to the world, vulnerably. The past few years, that hard-earned epiphany has taken shape into pristine alt-pop and aqueous R&B, which she uses as a canvas for unguarded confessions—raw lyrics poured straight from soul to song. Learning to be even more open with herself and her listeners has now culminated in the upcoming As I Am, her intimate debut EP.

As I Am is the result of Leonelle digging deeper, beyond internal doubts or external obstacles. While working as a producer in audio post-production during the day, she dedicated her weeknights and weekends to her own artistry in the studio—”my favorite place to be.” August 2020, she met producer Tony Livadas and, together, they finished the project by December that year.

Mixed by Curtis “Sircut” Bye (Roddy Ricch, Summer Walker, SZA and Baby Keem) and mastered by Million Dollar Snare (Roddy Ricch, Kendrick Lamar, Summer Walker and SZA), As I Am allows Leonelle to unpack her layered emotions over hypnotic harmonies, shimmering effects and soul-shaking sub-bass. The slow-burning, synth-based “Never Enough” combats someone who would lessen her self-worth.

Leonelle is keenly aware of society’s pitfalls that make it all the more difficult to just show up as you are and remain true to yourself – unbecoming everything the outside world tells you to be so you become who you truly are. But she also knows it’s possible. “I want to be a voice for the girl in her 20s who thinks she needs to be a certain way, or is in a toxic relationship,” she says. “To be a vessel for holding everything we experience as individuals in an open space, without judgement.”
