Listen to KIRBY’s Album Sis. For Self-Care

KIRBY’s album Sis. embraces the evolution of love’s journey and black womanhood in a playful way.

After attending Berklee College of Music, Kirby sparked a career in songwriting by sharing A Song A Day on YouTube for 275 days. KIRBY began penning hits for Beyonce, Rihanna, and Kanye West.

Following her success in songwriting, KIRBY has dropped several notable singles, such as “Vain” and “Loved by Me.”  Fans waited patiently for three long years for the album, but Sis. was well worth the wait.

Sis., her seven-track debut album, is a taste of what is to come for KIRBY. As with her previous work, KIRBY utilizes - guitar strings, puns, snapping - to make music that defies classification but not meaning.

One thing is unmistakable: Sis. is feminine soul music that sounds like “Nina Simone with a touch of ‘Yonce,” as KIRBY eloquently puts it. Every song is unique, and on the pulse of the times without being on the nose, almost every tune is a jingle.

VELVET

On the song Velvet, KIRBY personifies self-worth in a relationship, noting that her love is like “high, priced velvet.” The track can be found on Insecure: Music From The HBO Original Series, Season 4, featured by Lucky Daye. Velvet is an R&B staple for lockdown. KIRBY gives millennial Black women a love song that will stand the test of time; including, quarantine and chill.

IN CONCLUSION…

Filled with affirmations of self, gazes of society’s patriarchal inequality, and personal memories, Sis. is a mix of confidence and Black girl magic. It is impossible to listen to “Don’t Leave Your Girl,” “Koolaid,” and “Penny” without being enthralled in KIRBY’s vocals and production of the songs.

One thing is for certain, everyone should stream Sis. at least once for self-care. Check out her album below on Spotify:
