I’mmortal is A ‘Swamp Monster’
New York and London-based alt-pop visionary I’MMORTAL unveils the music video for her latest electrifying single, ‘SWAMP MONSTER’, self-released via Immortality just in time for Halloween.
Since emerging into the digital sphere in August 2023 with her debut tech-house single ‘Versace Spaceship’, I’MMORTAL has carved out a distinctive space at the intersection of electronic music, alt-pop and dark, otherworldly aesthetics. Her growing catalogue has amassed more than half a million streams on Spotify alone, earning acclaim from tastemakers including Rolling Stone UK, Electronic Groove, DJ Mag Spain, YourEDM, CLASH Magazine, NOTION, KALTBLUT Magazine, EARMILK, METAL Magazine and Wonderland Magazine. Her eerie single ‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’ has also received remixes from biskuwi and Droid Bishop, while glitch-heavy standout ‘Uncanny Valley’ was given a darksynth rework by Das Mörtal, which went on to receive support from NPR Music.
Hailing from California, I’MMORTAL spent her childhood and teenage years playing violin in orchestras, unknowingly developing composition skills crucial for her current music production. With a theatre background, she discovered her love for singing during high school musicals. Despite a fondness for classical music, she’s an avid listener of EDM, drawn to its gritty basslines and synthetic production. I’MMORTAL’s audio-visual synesthesia makes fusing otherworldly visuals to her imaginative beats come naturally to her. Her campy visual work often encompasses themes of death and rebirth, the natural world versus artificial constructs, femininity, and her AAPI identity. Her sound is influenced by acts like Sevdaliza, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Björk and SOPHIE.
‘SWAMP MONSTER’ is as rowdy as it is experimental. A gnarly electronic bassline anchors the track, whilst a hard-hitting rhythm section collides with forward-thinking synth lines and delightful electronic textures. I’MMORTAL’s haunting, whispery vocals add an eerie edge, tying the track’s dark, otherworldly atmosphere together into a fitting Halloween anthem.‘SWAMP MONSTER’ was written and produced by I’MMORTAL, and mixed and mastered by Mikaelin Bluespruce, who has credits for Solange, Mariah Carey, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Blood Orange. The track is sure to ensnare fans of SOPHIE, Arca, and umru.
Speaking on the track, I’MMORTAL shared: “I made ‘SWAMP MONSTER’ after watching John Waters’ movie ‘Pink Flamingos’. I love how leaning into filth was the main character Divine’s armor against traditional society’s constructs. ‘SWAMP MONSTER’ is a playful exploration of the unconventional. It’s about diving into the murky, taboo corners of your identity and reclaiming them as a source of strength.”
This experimental attitude is echoed in the track’s music video, directed by I’MMORTAL herself. In the video, the visual representation of the swamp monster takes the form of a bright pink, humanoid anglerfish which pole dances in a marshy void, under bright fluorescent lights.
Reflecting on the music video, I’MMORTAL shared: “‘SWAMP MONSTER’ is the first music video I’ve solo-directed, and making it taught me so much about my own creative process. From crafting the working lampshade hat to editing the video myself, I’m incredibly grateful for the chance to fully immerse myself in the hands-on creation of this video. I thought it would be beautifully bonkers to have a humanoid lamp reveal itself as an anglerfish, a whimsical metaphor for embracing your true self. I envisioned the atmosphere feeling like a liminal, fever-dream version of Alice in Wonderland, and I think the team nailed it!”
