Floral Couches “Heaven Is Home (With You)” Single
Nashville-based songwriter Cody Gray has been sharing music as Floral Couches since 2016, starting the project in his home of Chicago. After relocating to Music City in late 2022, the solo artist began assembling his next album Xtra Mild that combines modern bedroom pop, synth pop, and psychedelia, along with his love for all things soul, Motown, and jazz.
Floral Couches shared the first single earlier this fall — the relatable song about feeling on edge and the need to check your work emails on your off time, “Anxious on Vacation.” His second single “Heaven is Home (with you)” captures the Floral Couches sound best: led by a watery Rhodes piano and even featuring a reverberated flute solo, Gray belts out on this sultry smooth single while Zac Bron (they/them), aka Smooth Rogers, complements the song with their mixing, production, and synth solo.
Gray also brought in Alex Santilli for tracking drums (Late Nite Laundry, KAINA, Thee Sacred Souls), fellow Late Nite Laundry member Brenden Cabrera for additional production (Daniel Villarreal, Lester Rey, George Arthur Calendar, and more), and Post Animal’s Dalton Allison for mastering across Xtra Mild.
Gray said the single is “a serenade to my incredible wife, Rebecca. I wrote this song during the initial Covid lockdown. As horrible a time as it was, being with her was my light in the dark and made that year bearable.”
He continued, “While I was still writing the songs, she interrupted my recording and I held onto and used that cut during the intro of the song. Zac Bron (they/them) of Smooth Rogers helped produce and mix this song especially with the incredible synth solo they wrote during the second half of the track.”
Having honed his sound across his many years in Chicago, Floral Couches would open for artists such as Sam Evian, Sen Morimoto, and Late Nite Laundry before he relocated to Nashville.
Floral Couches will be releasing his second album Xtra Mild on April 19, 2023.
