Dexter and The Moonrocks are “12 Steps” Ahead of You
Wednesday, May 27th saw the country rock band Dexter and the Moonrocks release their newest single “12 Steps”. The song has been out for just under two months now and fans can’t get enough. They praise the song for its deep, emotional lyrics about walking away from a bad relationship. It starts slow on a methodical, guitar centric beat that ramps up as it progresses. The chorus has that classic alternative 90’s rock feel with a country twang courtesy of the West Texas group. It’s catchy, quick and to the point; but that’s what makes it special. The alt rock riffs mixed with the group’s country identity and southern draw proves to make this sound irresistible. Additionally, the song premiers alongside their newest hit single “Freakin’ Out”.
But Dexter and the Moonrocks aren’t alone on this track. They’ve recruited yet another West Texas band to feature on “12 Steps”: Treaty Oak Revival. The country rock band has landed #1 on Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums charts with hits like “Missed Call”, “No Vacancy“ and “In Between”. They add a deeper country vibe and more raspy element to the song. The track blends both groups’ distinct styles to create a catchy alternative country tune that fans are sure to love. The two West Texas groups have impeccable chemistry, with some fans calling it ‘the collab of the year’.
The 3:11 track explores the personal struggle of excessive substance use and the recovery surrounding it. The “12 steps to get away from you” signifies the strength it will take to remove yourself from this nuisance. The two groups use their experience in the subject matter to create a story that feels raw and real.
It also acts as a compelling metaphor. Listeners relate strongly to the lyrics as the ’12 step process’ helps describe describe the struggle of letting go of a toxic person. It may be enticing and pleasurable but in the end, one must make strides to better themselves. Whether that’s letting go of someone you once loved or realizing you need help, the two West Texas groups understand change is needed.
What’s Next for The Two Country-Rock bands in 2026?
Both groups are set to embark on their own summer long tours across the United States. Dexter and the Moonrocks kicked off their tour in their home state at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth, Texas on June 6th. Select shows will feature special guests including The Turnpike Troubadours and Bailey Zimmerman. Their last five shows, stretching from October 10th-October 18th, will be played in Australia. Treaty Oak Revival will keep their tour strictly domestic, with stops in major cities like Los Angeles, Charlotte, Austin and Las Vegas. Their last four stops, in late October and early November, will all be in their home state of Texas.
