To the delight of their fans across continents and generations, Depeche Mode recently released the first single from their upcoming Album, Memento Mori. The much anticipated album will reach fans next month, on March 24th.

Teased a few times across some live showings, fans have been looking forward to the full release of “Ghosts Again”. Luckily, the song does a lot, but does not disappoint. It’s little wonder why this song debuted at #1 on Billboard’s hot trending songs.

Dave Gahan comes through with his lyrical prowess, painting sorrowful images for listeners to sink into. Furthermore, Martin Gore carries the song higher on the wings of his highly emotive and rocky guitar work.

The song harkens back to the 80’s, where sometimes sad songs were the biggest earworms and it was that bittersweet draught of joy and sadness that had you coming back for more. “Ghosts Again” is a song you play when you’re sad to feel better, and conversely, a song you play when you’re happy to celebrate overcoming.

The delightfully nostalgic music is paired with an exceptional music video directed by long time Depeche Mode collaborator Anton Corbjin. We see the duo playing chess in a black and white world, before mournfully singing their hearts out in a graveyard reminiscent of the haunting scene from Easy Rider.

The themes and title of this album speak to the meaning of the release. This is the first music the duo has released since the death of their Keyboardist, Andy Fletcher.

This album is in essence two great artists experiencing catharsis through their work. Uniquely celebrating the beauty of life while simultaneously mourning it’s transient nature. If the rest of the album is anything like this first track, expect another major hit.
