Danielle Ponder Shows The “God of You”
Danielle Ponder, the Rochester-born, Atlanta-rooted singer-songwriter and powerhouse vocalist, returns with “God of You,” the latest single from her forthcoming sophomore album, Everything Has Changed, out October 9 via Dead Oceans in partnership with Phoebe Bridgers — Ponder’s debut on a label that’s also home to Mitski, Japanese Breakfast, and Bridgers herself.
Inspired in part by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You,” “God of You” is a towering ballad that confronts the ways Ponder once turned romantic validation into its own religion. She sings of “making a god” out of a man who ultimately proves unworthy of the devotion she gave him, confronting the ways love can blur judgment and make red flags look like reasons to stay. The accompanying video was shot in Dakar, Senegal, and was directed by Fede Kortez, who also directed the video for “Power,” which has already surpassed a million views and gained a recent cosign from SZA. “God of You” was written by Danielle Ponder and Mike Elizondo, with additional production by Bartees Strange. The single follows Ponder’s previously released tracks “Sun and Moon” and “Power,” offering another glimpse into Everything Has Changed, a deeply personal album about shedding old patterns, reclaiming agency, and confronting the stories we tell ourselves about love, worth, and who gets to hold power.
