Chris Brown releases 12th studio album ‘BROWN’
On Friday May 8th, 2-time Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Chris brown released his 12th studio album titled BROWN. The album’s title is a backronym for “Break Rules Only When Necessary”, just as the R&B legend used for his 2011 grammy award winning album F.A.M.E. The 27 track album is primarily R&B focused with features from Grammy award winning artist Leon Thomas and multi-time Grammy-nominated artists Bryson Tiller and Tank. The star studded feature list does not stop there. Rap stars Sexxy Red and GloRilla feature on the albums 7th track, Call Your name. The album’s 10th track, Red Rum, features multi-platinum award winning rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again. The total runtime is just over an hour and a half.
Brown describes the album as intimate and sensual as he focuses on emotional and romantic trauma. Slow R&B jams explore emotional vulnerability, relationship drama, and provide a commentary on personal growth and self reflection. Through this project, Brown revitalizes traditional R&B by blending pop, reggae and rap into the genre. The album is executively produced by Brown himself, though there are a laundry list of contributors in which he thanked via instagram, “TEAM BREEZY THANK YOU!!!” he wrote.
“Shout out to every producer, artist, writer, and creative that helped bring this magic to life.” This is brown’s first studio album since 11:11 which released in the fall of 2023 and was awarded Best R&B Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards.
In its early days, the album has been met with mixed reviews and criticism. Some listeners have complained the album is too long, overly sexual and filled with generic, boring lyrics. Others praise Brown’s creativity and adaptability. Mixed opinions have flooded Brown’s fans minds, but the 2-time Grammy award winning singer appeared with impeccable maturity on his instagram story over the weekend. He very humbly accepted the criticism and showed love to those whole listen to the 27-track project, “Just wanna say thank you to everyone who listened to this album. Been a lot of mixed reviews and I can take my audience’s criticism and opinion. The last three albums have came under the same scrutiny and eventually grew on people. Thank you for even taking the time out to listen.”
Brown will debut his new album on his year long R&B Tour, co headlined by Usher. A jam packed North American slate is set to begin on June 26th at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado and make stops in the Boston, Chicago, Toronto and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. Brown took to social media to preview the tour and thank fans again, “Just want to thank everybody man. It’s been a long journey, we getting ready for this tour but yea… I hope you enjoy this album, worked hard on it. The two legendary performers will conclude their tour in Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium on December 12th.
