An Interview W/ DJ & Producer Ravell

We had an opportunity to catchup with LA DJ and producer Ravell as he released his new single “Kiss”. As we sit down with him, we got a chance to know what inspires him, what is coming next, & more! Ravell is definitely up next.

Ravell turning the crowd up.

1. What inspired you to write your latest single, “Kiss”?

‘Kiss,’ was inspired by some of the confident and playful vibes I’ve seen at my shows. I wanted to capture that bold, flirty energy you feel when you’re feeling good, and about to hit the town or step out of the house! It’s all about having fun and being present.

2. Why did you call your latest single, “Kiss”?

The word ‘Kiss’ just really stood out in the lyrics. Since this song is lighthearted and playful, thought keeping it short and simple would be appropriate.

3. If you could direct a music video of your latest single, “Kiss”, what would you do and why?

I’d want to create a vibrant party atmosphere of course! The song itself is bouncy with a modern twist, so I’d love to showcase different types of people feeling themselves in whatever way, while enjoying the moment and embracing the music. The goal would be to emphasize the track’s fun, flirtatious edge and make it just as visually catchy— but depends on the budget haha do we get a blank check?

4. What drew you to house/electronic music? Any specific memories or moments?

It was actually random! I came across a mix CD made by a vendor at the swap meet that I went to daily when I was younger. It wasn’t mainstream at the time, so I was instantly intrigued. I just wanted to share my discovery with all of my friends and create a community around this fresh sound! There’s probably a video or two out there of me playing these random sets for people during lunch hour at school.

5. What do you want fans to take from your latest single, “Kiss”? What vibe should they get when listening to it?

I know it’s a little different from my previous releases. I want my fans to know it’s okay to get unserious in this serious world. That we should be having fun and feel good about ourselves wherever we may be in life.

6. How was playing Beyond Wonderland for the first time? What is your favorite music festival to perform at?

I mean— words can’t describe how amazing it was. It was special to debut my new track there and receive the crowd’s supportive and positive response. Every single festival I have played is my favorite— they’re all so different but it’s the infectious energy that makes it so homey, making it impossible to choose.

7. How did you start to DJ? What was that experience like for you starting out when you were 12?

Man, I can’t believe I started DJing when I was 12 years old! It was an exciting and transformative experience for me. I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life when my parents helped me buy my first DJ equipment. With my dad, Jose’s guidance, I learned the basics of mixing tracks and transitioning smoothly between songs. You’ll always see him dancing at my shows too! Make sure to say hi to the man who made it all possible!

8. What is your dream collaboration for a single, EP, or an album and why?

Ultimately, my dream collaboration would be with Carlos Santana. His incredible guitar sound and soulful style brings out this unexplainable depth and emotion to his music. Collaborating with him would be a once in a lifetime chance to blend his iconic artistry with my own style, creating something truly special and memorable.

9. Who are your musical inspirations and why?

My musical inspirations come from a variety of genres and eras outside of EDM. I always answer this question with the iconic Celia Cruz. If you haven’t heard her— you have to. Her passion is unmatched. Not only through her voice but through her musicality.

10. Why do you think audiences are drawn to your musical style and personality?

I think audiences are drawn to my musical style and energy because I strive to create an authentic vibe to make sure everyone is having a good time! I’ve been told that I build and maintain an emotional connection with the crowd because I gauge how everyone is feeling as I play and what they respond to. I’m responsible for taking them on a solid journey and I think it’s important to make sure I’m listening to their needs as well. I incorporate storytelling and try to express my gratitude through carefully curated mixes. I wouldn’t be anything without my fans and future fans.

11. For those who look up to you and your career trajectory, what words of advice would you give to those who want to start becoming a DJ?

My best advice is to practice regularly and explore different genres to find your own style. Stay true to yourself and connect with others in the industry to build relationships and opportunities. Learn from others’ experiences, stay humble and be open to feedback.

12. If you could describe your musical journey in one word, what would it be and why?

Transformative: My musical journey has been a continuous process of growth and change, pushing me to explore new sounds, learn new skills, and evolve both as an artist and as a person. You’ll see what I mean with all of the upcoming song releases— they all vary by sound but still have a signature Ravell energy!
