Alt-Pop Artist Genevieve Stokes Announces Tour 2021-2022

Making songs on GarageBand in high school was just the beginning for Portland, Maine singer, songwriter, and pianist Genevieve Stokes. According to “Portland Press Herald,” Stokes has written music since she was 8 years old. At 14, she enrolled at the Maine Academy of Modern Music. There she won best female vocalist three years in a row.

Noted in the “About” section of her website, she started by uploading songs onto Soundcloud . Then, in summer 2019, she uploaded her senior project and an audition video onto YouTube. The videos caught the attention of producer and songwriter Brian Kierulf, who is now her manager. Soon after, in fall 2019, Stokes signed onto Atlantic Records. Atlantic Records has previously signed artists like Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, and Janelle Monáe.

Hit Single “Surface Tension”

Notably, Stokes is on a quick and steady rise. For instance, this is clear from the popularity of her single “Surface Tension,” released February 28, 2020. Back in March, the song came up in my “Discover Weekly” playlist on Spotify. Immediately, Stokes’ first few seconds of piano melted my ears. Additionally, the first line sucked me deeper in. “I’m missing people I’ve never met,” Stokes sings. In short, she was a small artist at the time, but Stokes stood out to me. It has been exciting to see her growing over the past year. At 2.2 million plays on Spotify today, “Surface Tension” has soared since its original release.

Notably, Stokes released her first EP “Swimming Lessons” in March 2021. It includes “Surface Tension” and “Running Away,” both of which have over one million plays on Spotify. The artist recently announced that she is going on tour in the United States. Beginning this November, she will be performing in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, and Los Angeles, among a few other states. On the whole, Stokes combines sounds that uniquely energize the nostalgia and heartache in her lyrics. I can’t wait to hear more from her.
