Everyone saw that Spotify notification on Friday right? Normani released her new single, “1:59” featuring Gunna on all music streaming platforms! The ballad has an edgy, R&B vibe with a few elements of Afrobeats from Gunna about reconnecting with a past lover and fighting the temptation of attractive every time they meet. Check out the song and the review below!

1:59 Single Review

1:59 is a R&B ballad that fuses Timbaland-inspired beats with a few Afrobeat elements to drive Normani’s vocals and Gunna’s smooth verse. The beginning of the song begins with Normani suggesting her past lover to come over to fulfill both of their fantasies despite that they are separated. With the infectious chorus of “Boy, what you gon’ do with it?”, Normani’s hints are becoming more apparent when she continues in the song. Then, Gunna comes on the track with his perspective of the song with more explicit sexual undertones of the evening that he will share with his past lover.

In all honesty, the song reminds me of “What’s It Gonna Be” by Busta Rhymes and Janet Jackson because of the suggestive lyrics and the chemistry between both artists. Listen to the song here!

Another aspect that “1:59” has that is very special is how the baseline resembles a heartbeat. The resonance of the bass echoing in and out as the chorus is playing through. Furthermore, the bassline lets the listeners imagine themselves in this scenario to feel the complicated emotions of being with a past lover. Lastly, Normani and Gunna created a piece that anyone who has been in a relationship or situationship can relate to, especially when they are thinking about their lover at 1:59!
