Spending ‘The Lost Weekend’ With Phoebe Bridgers New Album
Phoebe Bridgers released her third studio album, ‘The Lost Weekend,’ over the weekend, a worthy successor to her critically acclaimed and devastating last album, ‘Punisher'(2020). Production for the album includes Bridgers herself, Tony Berg, Ethan Gruska, Jack Antonoff, and Alex G and additional vocals from Bo Burnham
The emotional punch hits you on the first grainy words of the leading track “the Outside,” where her voice is a mechanical overture to what this album has to offer.
“Lost Boys “is the album’s leading single that explores an arrested development and how self-destructive it can be to hang onto adolescent tendencies.
The song was accompanied by an official music video and a fantasy motif that adds to the song’s aimless feeling.
This theme continues into “Kill Me” and “Governor’s Ball,” bleeding into each other and seeping into “Bobby”.
In an interview with Krui 89.7 FM, Bridgers described this specific track as “I tend to write love songs that are soaked in pain and irony, and I really didn’t want to do it this time because it didn’t feel like that. I wanted to write about the feeling of love at first hookup – just your life being totally turned upside down by someone in a good way.” The song is an emotional high.
However, that high relaxed in the title track “The Lost Weekend” and it’s repraise that splits the album into its thesis of holding on to the past .
“Still Standing” is a nice tribute to Bridger’s late father after his passing. “As Above” hits like a nice endpoint for the album and is one of the songs she debuted at her secret shows earlier this year that stood out on it’s own two legs.
