OpenWav, Music Ownership Platform, Officially Launches
The new music platform, OpenWav, was officially launched by Wyclef Jean and Jaeson Ma on June 11th, aiming to help independent artists promote and monetize their music.
Occurring during Indie Music Week, the event was held at the Intercontinental Hotel from 4: 30p.m to 5: 30p.m, referred to as the “The Ownership Era of Music.” Not only did this event celebrate the release of what’s being called “a disruptive new music platform”, but it also demonstrated how users can benefit from the app by uploading new content.
Grammy-winning artist, Wyclef Jean, as well as Jaeson Ma, co-founder of 88rising and investor in Musical.ly and Triller, were accompanied by the former Head of Amazon Music promoting independent artists, Madeline Nelson. These trailblazers came together in hopes of giving artists creative freedom and introducing something different to the music industry.
The layout of OpenWav, much like TikTok, utilizes an “Explore” page where users can be introduced to new artists and watch their videos. From there, users are given the option to like their posts and follow them.
The music platform, OpenWav, has a special feature called “Nearby” where music events in your city are promoted to you directly. This is a great way for users to track events and keep up with their favorite new artists.
As well as that, OpenWav has a “Shop” feature which gives users the opportunity to purchase clothing for all ages groups, phone cases, wall art, mugs & bottles and business-related merchandise.
OpenWav’s debut may trigger change within the music industry that we’ve never seen before. Music artists will no longer have to answer to music labels that restrict their creativity and limit their releases.
However, if users are not attracted to OpenWav, independent music artists could have a difficult time becoming popular and gauging the attention of a stable audience. With many competitors, such as TikTok, the launch of OpenWav will have to bring fresh perspectives to keep us entertained.
