Music: What You Listen To Matters
Picture this: you are at the gym and looking for something to listen to. Depending on what type of workout you’re doing or what type of mood you’re in, you’ll usually put on something comfortable to your certain needs at that point and time. What a lot of people don’t realize though is that the type of music we listen to can affect our mood, mind and body.
Music can affect behavior by being a motivator, a timer for completing tasks, or a mood enhancer. A UK study explored how “drill” music, a genre of rap characterized by threatening lyrics, might be linked to attention-seeking crime. This isn’t anything new, but the growth of social media allows more recording and sharing. Drill rap isn’t the only genre of music that has negative connotation and is boosted by social media. There are a lot of genres that fit into that category.
However, there are some categories of music that are the opposite and brings positive moods and a sent of motivation. For example Christian music is nothing but positivity. It is known that many perceive it as a type of genre to only be listened to if you are a Christian or in church, but this new generation of christian artists has blossomed the genre and made it more modern and accessible to listeners anywhere they would like to listen.
Personally, I listen to Christian music on the regular. I feel as though it boosts my thought process and helps me stay focused on positives and things that make me better instead of falling into bad habits that don’t elevate the person I already am. I’m a person that’s all about positivity and being the best version of myself so I try to make sure that I reflect that in everything I do, which even involves the music I listen to.
