Warner Bros. Begins Development of a “Game of Thrones” Movie

Just six years after the conclusion of its controversial series finale, Game of Thrones is heading to the big screen.

House of Cards showrunner and Andor writer Beau Willimon has reportedly submitted a draft script to Warner Brothers.

While there is no definitive story, the movie is currently hanging in the balance of Paramount’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. after a long bidding war with rival Netflix. Though the merger between the studios is expected to close by the fall, there is the concern that Paramount will scrap the project before production even begins.

The idea of a Game of Thrones motion picture isn’t new, original series showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss in 2013 pitched the idea of ending the series with a trilogy of films, however this idea was pushed aside by HBO in order to focus on their subscription business.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novels, Game of Thrones became a hit TV series on HBO in April of 2011, later winning 59 Primetime Emmy Awards and garnering 164 nominations. However the show would end with a disappointing final season, mainly attributed to rushed pacing and inconsistent character development.

Since the show’s finale however, HBO has developed two spinoff shows like House of the Dragon and more recently The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms which has garnered positive reviews in its first season along with a second season currently in development.
