“WEAPONS” is a Massive Success With $70M Opening

Zach Cregger’s highly anticipated horror film “WEAPONS” had a global opening of $70M, already surpassing its $38M budget.

“WEAPONS” was able to instantly draw a lot of audiences in just by the description on its main poster: “LAST NIGHT AT 2:17 AM, EVERY CHILD FROM MRS. GANDY’S CLASS WOKE UP, GOT OUT OF BED, WENT DOWNSTAIRS, OPENED THE FRONT DOOR, WALKED INTO THE DARK …AND THEY NEVER CAME BACK.” The film follows a community trying to find out what happened to all but one student in an entire class of elementary school children who vanished in the middle of the night. Julie Garner plays the teacher, Justine Grandy, determined to find answers on what happened to her class. Josh Brolin plays Archer Graff, the father of one of the missing children. The film has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and is receiving rave reviews by audiences – chances are it will continue to succeed in the box office from such positive word of mouth. Just one of the many parts of the film being praised is Amy Madigan’s performance as the character Gladys Lilly, sparking some early buzz for a potential Oscar nomination.

It’s no surprise that Jordan Peele allegedly got in an intense bidding war to direct this film, because an original movie with this great of a concept is bound to be fought over. While Jordan Peele also would have done great things with this script, it’s great that “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger was able to add another notch onto his belt so early into his solo directing career.

“WEAPONS” is one of the biggest debuts that a completely original film has had in a long time, and movies like this are what the film industry needs to truly thrive. Hopefully this breath of fresh air among a fog of adaptations and remakes will show producers what can come from having faith in an original project.
