Nija Puts Ex On Speed Dial In New Single, “I Just Called”

Nija Puts Ex On Speed Dial In New Single, “I Just Called”

Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Nija is turning up the feels in her brand new single, “I Just Called,” featuring songwriter-producer Blxst, which was released on December 12. The single, which covers that tempting feeling of going back to a past lover, comes ahead of her upcoming EP, “What I Didn’t Say,” which is due to be released on January 23, 2026.

“I Just Called” will be the fourth single released by Nija this year. With  “32nd Floor,” a seductive ballad that covers the rush-like feeling of sneaking away with a date, “Heaven,” a relaxed song that channels the sensuality of love, and “Back Outside,” which takes to the streets to mark the end of a flip-floppy relationship, preceding it.

The new music is exciting, coming from the R&B singer, being that this will be her first extended solo project since her debut album, “Don’t Say I Didn’t Warn You,” which was released in 2022.

Adding another layer to the anticipation, Nija, who’s largely known for her  songwriting credits, receiving a nomination during the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in the Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical category and co-writing songs including “Positions,” (Ariana Grande), “Cozy” (Beyoncé), and “KEHLANI” (Jordan Adetunji), is taking on her own voice.

And her pen is bringing in the heat, once again, in “I Just Called,” a sultry track that puts the gravitational pull-like feeling drawing people back to their exes on full display. Opening with a romantic violin introduction that leads into her lusty, down-tempo sound.

The beat has a frequency-like cadence to it, highly reflecting the natural high born out of the closeness or absence of a lover. Her lyrics, stating, “ I just called to say I miss you bae, and I need you here, I don’t care what my pride say…” is one of relatability. As much as most people don’t want to admit, almost everyone has that one person they’d go back to time and time again, and this single captures that all-consuming desire perfectly. Here, love doesn’t live in the shadows; it’s vulnerable, spoken, and shown over lyrics.

Blxst’s verse adds dimension by mirroring the feelings Nija extensively describes, singing, “I’m committed like a signed agreement,” continuing the feeling of yearning that comes after separation.

“I Just Called” serves as a snapshot for the fervent nature of love, longing, and heartache, and is the perfect late-night song for anyone contemplating sending that “I miss you” text to their ex.
