MONKyMAN Releases New Single, “Better In Love”

With “Better in Love,” MONKyMAN leans into his usual Afro-rhythmic, jazzy, and electronic sound.

The song is off his album “What About Love,” which was released via Laut & Luise.

The song begins with energetic, monotonic, multilingual vocals and becomes layered with electronic sounds. Then it switches to a softer chorus where the singer croons, “Better in love / I feel better in love.”

It’s easy to believe MONKyMAN here: it’s simply better to feel in love. But there’s an additional layer of meaning which MONKyMAN slowly uncovers.

The chorus rides higher and higher, then transitions to “I feel / I feel / I feel,” culminating in repetitions of the phrase “Better in love” with electronic effects overlaying the lyrics.

The effects add to the feeling of vagueness and fogginess the song inspires, where it’s unsure whether the singer really feels better in love or is just iterating on the theme.

The song then continues with the same rap-like lyrics as it began, along with an extended electronic sequence. This is MONKyMAN at his core: a singer fully aware of the impact electric sounds have, and knowing how to make them complement his airy, almost breathy lyrics.

“You know how I feel / you feel love,” he concludes, tying the listener to their partner. Again, it’s unclear if the lyrics are meant to remind the listener that they feel the same way as their partner, or if it is just focused on one feeling love for the other without it being reciprocated. After all, “you know how I feel” can have many meanings, while “you feel love” has one.

“‘Better In Love’ closes the album just like it always closed my live shows: as a reminder that love really is the force that brings us all together,” said MONKyMAN of the single.

Ultimately, “Better in Love” is a strong piece in MONKyMAN’s repertoire, and fans of electric, emotional music will find it a welcome addition to their playlists.
