JP Saxe’s Emotional Evolution: A Glimpse Into ‘Articulate Excuses’

JP Saxe is a Toronto-born singer-songwriter known for the raw and emotional storytelling that captivates his listeners in his music. His biggest hit, which set his career off, “If the World Was Ending,” was released in 2019. The song, featuring pop singer Julia Micheals, became a sad love story that resonated with many people as the world was overcome by the COVID-19 pandemic. “If the World Was Ending” tells the story of two lovers who have broken up, but when faced with the possibility of the world ending, they ask each other if they would come over and spend it together. The lyrics express the beauty of abandoning fear and loving someone when it matters. The song was well received and won the Grammy for Song of the Year 2021.

JP Saxe has had hit after hit since the jumpstart of his career. “A Little Bit Yours” and “Explain You” are heart-shattering songs that gained the attention of many listeners. He tells stories of being heartbroken, missing someone you once loved, and the realistic process of getting over a loss. His pop-rooted sound often features gentle piano infused with indie and alternative influences.

JP Saxe New Album Articulate Excuses

JP Saxe is releasing a two-part album. On April 18th, he will release the first part, Articulate Excuses. He has released two songs from the album so far giving his listeners a taste of what’s to come. The songs, “SAFE” and “SMARTPHONE MAKE ME DUMB,” have gained attention on TikTok.

“SMARTPHONE MAKE ME DUMB,” begins with a piano introduction and lyrics that reveal his struggles with being alone with his thoughts and anxiety. The lyrics that strike controversy are “Smartphone make be dumb/ Whiskey make me numb/ Women make me/ mmm, mmm.” Fans thought that the simplicity of these lyrics didn’t match the deep and thought-provoking lyrics he is known for. Some even thought the song was satire. In reality, the simplicity of the lyrics was a creative choice.

“Consciousness is exhausting,” says Saxe. “Staring at hot strangers and whales and hydraulic smushed crayons for 5 seconds at a time on your phone is way easier. So is poison-induced vulnerability (alcohol) and disconnection masked as connection (flippant sex). Sure, maybe our brains are slowly rotting, but at least we’re not burdened by the stress of aliveness.”

On April 18th, the full eight-track album Articulate Excuses will be available on Spotify and Apple Music.
