Amaarae Announces New Album “Black Star”
The Bronx-born singer Amaarae gained international attention in 2020. Her song “Sad Girlz Luv Money” went viral on the social media app TikTok, and the consequent remix featuring Kali Uchis entered global charts. Her album, “The Angel You Don’t Know” was listed as one of the best new albums of 2020, and given the accolade of “Best New Music” by Pitchfork.
Born Ama Serwah Genfi, Amaarae has been recognized not only for her unique fusion of pop, R&B, and afrobeats, but for her unique and trendsetting style. She has been featured in many best-dressed lists, and been included in Vogue’s 2018 list of 100 notable style influencers. Her style is a natural consequence of her somewhat fluid interpretation of her own gender and sexuality, a theme that she further explores within her music.
Postceding the success of “The Angel You Don’t Know,” Amaarae released her sophomore album, “Fountain Baby” in . Like its predecessor, the album found a home on numerous “best of” charts, while Amaarae continued to explore the nuanced nature of her gender expression.
Possibly electing to not let fans wait too long until her next project, Amaarae has announced her third album a year out from the release of her second. Initially announcing it on the Coachella stage in 2025, Amaarae took to Instagram this week to present the official name and lead single of the cycle. Titled “Black Star,” as a nod to the symbol on the Ghanian flag and the Ghanian coat of arms, the album is positioned to be another exploration of the intersection of queer and BIPOC identities.
Longtime supporters of the artist can expect more of Amaarae’s lush production and high-pitched vocals as well. As anticipation builds, Black Star looks poised to be one of the most innovative and culturally resonant albums of the year—solidifying Amaarae as not just an icon of style, but a visionary voice in global pop.
